Projects and Initiatives
- BZA Quarterly Meetings: The D.C. Board of Zoning Adjustments (BZA), as part of its Order approving Georgetown University's 1990 Campus Plan, mandated that the University and surrounding community groups meet quarterly to share information and have discussions about the University's plans. Community groups take turns hosting the meetings, which are generally well attended. Topics covered range from updates on university neightborhood clean-up efforts and helicopter reports from the hospital to issues regarding Georgetown University's campus plan process. While the BZA did not mandate the continuation of these quarterly meetings in its order approving GU's 2000 Campus Plan, the Office of External Relations has continued to facilitate and organize them.
- City Council Briefing: Assistant Vice President for External Relations, Linda Greenan, facilitated a briefing for D.C. City Council staff on Georgetown University's emergency preparedness efforts relating to September 11th. Dr James Welch, Director of the Primary Care Clinic; Dr. Mary Young, infectious disease expert at GU's Medical Center; and Phil Hagan, GU's Director for Safety and Environmental Management, provided a detailed presentation on Anthrax, environmental testing and outreach to students, faculty and staff regarding public health concerns.
- Georgetown University's Athletic Workforce Development Partnership with D.C. Public Schools: The Office of External Relations, along with the Athletic Department at Georgetown University, launched a year-long partnership which places more than 50 D.C. Public School eighth graders from four junior high and middle schools with ten athletic coaches at Georgetown. The experience will allow them to get a glimpse of sports management, sports medicine, marketing and promotions, sports law and different facets of intercollegiate activities while observing a coach in the workplace.
- Georgetown University's United Way Campaign: Each Year, the United Way Campaign of the National Capital Area gives the university community an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. Our contributions support programs and services that benefit more than one million people -- roughly one of every three residents -- in the Washington metropolitan area.
- Campus Plan Community Planning Meeting: The Office of External Relations facilitated and participated in an all day meeting between neighbors and university officials to discuss the development of the 2010 Campus Plan. This was the first in a series of meetings planned to report to and receive input from the community with respect to the 2010 Campus Plan.
